1890 Peugeot Cross Frame Safety

By comparing the 1886 cross-frame on the previous page with this 1889 model, you can see some major leaps in bicycle design. Whereas the 1886 used a steering head from an Ordinary, by 1889 bicycles had already developed the same steering arrangement used on bicycles now, ie ball bearings in the headstock. The tubing was already surprisingly lightweight by comparison – which means that extra bracing is important. The 1889 Peugeot is triangulated with a down-stay and chain-stays.

The restoration of this rare old machine  taught me a lot about how the earliest bicycles were built. You can see Tony taking it for a spin in the video further down the page. I sold it in 2011.

DURING RESTORATION

Below, at the blacksmith: some pedal cranks have been forged, in a similar fashion to their manufacture in 1888.

Below, stays have been manufactured and fitted.

The frame is quite lightweight, so I can see why it was considered necessary to add strengthening stays for extra support. The single front and double rear stays have created a triangulated frame.
