The above extract from a 1921 Cycling magazine remarks on a “frame with leaf springs and hinged chain stays” seen at a French show. I have no record of that model going into production. However, in 1925, Vialle Freres introduced their revolutionary ‘Bicyclette Elastique.’ The prototype model was sold during 1926, with the full production model – its name abbreviated to the ‘Velastic’ – going on sale in 1927.

As well as the unique suspension feature, it was a radical design because it was marketed as a ‘mixte’ ie suitable for both ladies and gentlemen. I think it was the first unisex model.

The Velastic – also described as a ‘Bicyclette Elastique’ – was built in France by the Vialle brothers, and introduced in 1925. An advertisement claimed that it made cycling as comfortable as sitting in an armchair. The forks, handlebars and rod brakes are roadster style, and its key feature is the saddle support, formed by the heavy steel leaf spring. The spring bolts directly into a short box-section seat tube welded to a girder, and the seat height can be changed by lifting or dropping the leaf spring.

This rare 93-year-old bicycle is in good all-round condition and is ready to ride.
